Ships History

Once a ship had been built and launched she then had to be out-fitted, and then complete sea trials
before being handed over to her new owners,

of course when the ship is for the Royal Navy then she has to also complete her trials to the satisfaction of the Navy Board before being commissioned into the service.

HMS BASSET was the first of her class designated as a "Dog Class" armed trawler built and designed in the Leith Shipyards of Henry Robb Ltd and the fore runner of all other of her class.

We try here to give as full an account of her history as time and research permits, if you know of missing info
or you have any photographs of her, then please get in touch and we shall update her story as we go along.

Tales from the Ship

Here you will find the stories from the men and women who sailed on the ships, what was it really like to be working on a ship in a raging sea and in the pitch dark of night, the real stories some funny some sad, some good and some bad.

Dedicated to all the brave men and women who sailed the vessels from the Leith Shipyards.

Should you know of anyone who may have sailed on her, then please feel free to get in touch so that we can add the story here.

08-08-40 P2947 Hurricane Mk1 of 238Sqn ditched in the Channel off the IOW at 13:40hrs after an attack on a Heinkel He59, during a search for earlier squadron losses. Pilot: S/L Harold Fenton rescued by H.M.S Basset:

When two of his pilots were reported missing in the Channel, Squadron Leader Harold Fenton flew gamely off to search for them-only to find himself outduelled and shot down by a German observation plane. Hauled aboard the trawler HMS Bassett, Fenton spend a damp unhappy afternoon drying out in the boiler-room-alo ng with a German pilot so confident he’d flown over England with nothing more lethal than a Very pistol and a packet of prophylactics.

We have in our archives (here in Canada) a letter written from St. John's on 8/3/42. The letter is addressed to mother - the author of the letter is "your loving son Gus." In the letter he writes that when he is on leave he goes to the girlfriends house - that he has a good relationship with the parents. he also notes that he has been "mentioned in the Despatches."
Would love to find out who Gus is? is their a crew list of the H.M.S. Basset for 1942?
