George Gibson & Co. Ltd.—established in 1797—the firm of Geo. Gibson & Co. has been around for many years with there experience in shipping being built up over some 200 years since the long gone days of 1797.

Its principal activities used to be devoted to trading with near continental ports with which it used to operate regular sailing schedules to the likes of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Ghent, with further sailings to Dunkirk, Rouen and Paris, and as far as Portugal where Gibson ships could be seen in Porto and Lisbon.

Of all the ship owning companies whose headquarters where based at Leith, the oldest is undoubtedly Messrs. George Gibson and Company, Ltd., which was founded in 1797.

It is recorded that as far back as 1758 a Mr. Mungo Campbell Gibson was connected with the shipping trade of the Port, and it is believed that this connection has continued unbroken from then till now

George Gibson & Co Ltd. Involved in sea and coastal water transport was incorporated in 1915.

In 1972 Anchor Line Ltd acquired George Gibson & Co Ltd. In 1976 the Anchor Line Co Ltd structure was recast and had five operating divisions - Anchor Line Eastern Services Ltd, Anchor Line Ship Management, Currie Line Ltd., George Gibson & Co (concerned with the gas tanker fleet), Runciman Shipping Ltd (previously called Walter Runciman & Co Ltd).

Anchor Line Eastern Services Ltd, Anchor Line Ship Management Ltd and George Gibson & Co were all still active at the start of the 21st century.
